MARSHFIELD – Marshfield overcame a three-goal deficit to tie the game, but couldn’t hold on to the momentum and dropped a 7-5 decision to Wisconsin Rapids in a wild Wisconsin Valley Conference boys soccer game Thursday at Griese Park.

A goal from Collin Nikolai and two goals by Hunter McManus midway through the second half tied the game at 4-4 after Rapids had jumped out to a 4-1 lead 16 seconds into the half.

Noah Gust scored and Jack Kiiskila scored less than 4 minutes apart to put Rapids back on top, and after Gabe Ronan scored for the Tigers, Colin Lindvig netted his second goal of the game with 5:05 remaining to ice it for the Raiders (5-3 overall, 3-1 WVC).

“Down 4-1, we showed a lot of heart fighting back to make it 4-4 and contributing to a very wild, back and forth, high-paced second half with eight goals scored,” Marshfield coach Steve McCann said. “Wisconsin Rapids scored eight and six goals in its last two games before this, and showed why. They are a young, but talented team. Kudos to them. I look forward to playing them again.”

Luke McCann scored the game’s first goal for Marshfield, 6:45 in, before Rapids ripped off four-straight to pull ahead.

Mathias Holm had 14 saves in goal for the Tigers (1-3-1, 1-2 WVC).
