STEVENS POINT – The Marshfield football team’s playoff hopes took a big hit with a 48-21 loss to Stevens Point on Friday night at Goerke Field in Valley Football Association South Division action.
The game started out great for the Tigers, who scored on their first two possessions, but Stevens Point would rip off 48 unanswered points to roll to the victory.
Stevens Point clinches a WIAA playoff spot with the win, improving to 5-2 overall and 4-2 in the VFA South. Marshfield is now 3-4 and 2-4 in the conference. The Tigers must win at Oshkosh North on Oct. 9 and at home against undefeated Fond du Lac on Oct. 16 to qualify for the postseason.
Jon Hardinger caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from Tyson Slade and Nick Hoheisel added a 1-yard TD run to put the Tigers up 14-0 with 3:20 to go in the first quarter.
From there, it was all Panthers. Victor Kizewski ran for three touchdowns and Gus Turner-Zick had a pair of scores for Stevens Point.
Point outgained Marshfield 418-228 and forced three Slade interceptions.
Hoheisel finished with 155 yards rushing and added a 38-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter for the Tigers.
Next Friday’s game against Oshkosh North at Titan Stadium in Oshkosh begins at 5 p.m. The game will be broadcast on WDLB-AM 1450 and wdlbwosq.com.
