Marshfield’s top doubles team of Olivia Haessly & Emily Serchen qualify for state at Division 1 girls tennis sectional

CHIPPEWA FALLS – Marshfield’s No. 1 doubles team of Olivia Haessly and Emily Serchen won their first match and ended up finishing fourth to qualify for the state meet on Thursday at the WIAA Division 1 girls tennis sectional at Chippewa Falls High School.

Haessly and Serchen, both seniors, beat AnnMarie White and Alli Norder of Menomonie 6-2, 6-0, in the quarterfinals to earn a berth in next week’s 2015 WIAA State Individual Girls Tennis Tournament in Madison.

The Marshfield duo lost in the semifinals to Jaide Barber and Juliet Champion of Stevens Point 6-3, 6-0, in the semifinals and dropped the third-place match to Eva O’Melia and Maddie Barnes of Rhinelander 6-2, 7-5, to finish fourth.

Serchen and Haessly are now 16-11 and will learn their first-round match at the state tournament by this weekend. They will play at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison next Thursday, Oct. 15.

Marshfield sophomore Ashley Schultz lost her first match at No. 1 singles, falling 6-0, 6-0, to Eau Claire Memorial junior Catherine Lindsay in the first round and was eliminated.

The top four finishers in No. 1 singles and doubles, and the champion at No. 2 singles and doubles, move on to the state individual tournament.

Memorial went on to win the team title and will participate in the 2015 WIAA State Team Girls Tennis Tournament in Madison on Oct. 23-24.
