OSSEO – The Spencer/Columbus Catholic football team completed an undefeated regular season and finished off its first outright Cloverbelt Conference championship with a 48-16 rout of Osseo-Fairchild on Friday night at Osseo-Fairchild High School.
The Rockets rolled out to a 24-0 halftime lead and led 40-0 after three quarters on their way to another win.
The victory clinches the co-op team’s first conference title and is the first for a Spencer team since winning the Marawood Conference back in 1982. The Rockets will assuredly be a No. 1 seed in the upcoming WIAA Division 5 playoffs and will host a Level 1 matchup on Oct. 23 or Oct. 24. The brackets will be announced on Saturday afternoon.
Hunter Luepke ran for 171 yards on just five carries, scoring on runs of 69, 30 and 46 yards for Spencer/Columbus.
Calvin Lenz tossed a 64-yard touchdown pass to Hunter Hildebrandt, Noah Zastrow returned a block punt for a touchdown, and Jon Bauer added a 6-yard scoring run late to round out the Rockets’ scoring.
“We are very proud of the guys for winning the first conference championship for the co-op,” S/C coach Jason Gorst said. “It has been a great season and we are hoping to extend it.”
The Rockets (9-0, 7-0 Cloverbelt Conference) outgained Osseo-Fairchild (3-6, 2-5 Cloverbelt) 407-168 overall and 305-61 on the ground.
