MADISON – The University of Marshfield/Wood County men’s tennis team took sixth and the women’s team finished eighth last Saturday at the Wisconsin Junior College Athletic Association state tennis tournament.
Seven of the eight Marauders men’s individuals or doubles teams won their first matches and lost their second to get bumped from the tournament.
UW-Marshfield/Wood County men’s singles players that lost in the second round were Brent Ystad at No. 1, Brock Baumann at No. 2, Ryan Tews at No. 4 and Ryan Stroebel at No. 6.
No. 5 singles player Joe Gouin lost his first match and won a consolation match before being eliminated.
In doubles, Ystad and Baumann at No. 1, Tews and Mike LaFave at No. 2, and Stroebel and Gouin at No. 3 all won their first matches before losing in the second round.
Stephanie Rybicki and Ashley Pongratz won their first match at No. 1 doubles before losing in the second round for the women’s team.
Pongratz was the lone singles competitor for the Marauders winner. She lost her first match, won a consolation match, then was eliminated.
