A number of former local high school athletes have moved on to the next level and are playing sports collegiately across the country.

Periodically, MarshfieldAreaSports.com will publish a College Sports Roundup updating readers of those local athletes’ exploits at the collegiate level.

Goeppinger, McCann earn all-conference honors
ST. PAUL, Minn. – Emily Goeppinger and Matt McCann, both 2014 Marshfield High School graduates, earned all-Upper Midwest Athletic Conference honors while playing soccer for the University of Northwestern (Minn.).

Goeppinger scored three goals, including two game-winners, for Northwestern and earned second-team all-UMAC accolades. She was an honorable mention choice last year as a freshman. The Northwestern women’s soccer team finished 13-7 overall after losing 3-0 to Trinity Christian College (Ill.) in a National Christian College Athletic Association regional game.

McCann, a sophomore midfielder, was a first-team all-UMAC pick after leading Northwestern in points with three goals and two assists this season. All three of his goals were game-winners for Northwestern, which finished 5-11-1.

McCann, who started all 17 games this season, was the conference Rookie of the Year last season.

Johnson contributing for UW-River Falls hockey
RIVER FALLS – Paige Johnson, a 2013 Spencer High School graduate and former player for the Marshfield girls hockey team, has played in all eight games this season for the University of Wisconsin-River Falls women’s hockey team.

Johnson has scored two goals for the Falcons, who are 6-2 overall and 3-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Johnson scored the Falcons’ first goal in a 5-1 win over St. Olaf (Minn.) on Nov. 24.

River Falls plays a home-and-home against UW-Superior this weekend. The Falcons are at Superior on Friday night and the two teams will play at River Falls on Saturday afternoon.

Michaelis debuts for Minnesota-Crookston
CROOKSTON, Minn. – Caitlin Michaelis, a 2015 graduate of Marshfield High School, is a freshman for the University of Minnesota-Crookston women’s basketball team.

Michaelis, who graduated last year as Marshfield’s third all-time leading scorer with 1,195 career points, has come off the bench in all five of the Eagles’ games this season. She is averaging 19 minutes, 4.6 points, one assist, and 3.4 rebounds per contest.

Michaelis had five points, including a 3-pointer, in an 80-52 win over Bemidji State in Crookston’s Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NCAA Division II) opener last week. The Eagles (4-1) play at Minnesota-Duluth on Friday and St. Cloud State on Saturday in NSIC action.

Zuiker coming off bench for UWSP
STEVENS POINT – Luke Zuiker, a 2014 Marshfield High School grad, is coming off the bench for the UW-Stevens Point men’s basketball team, which is ranked seventh in this week’s D3hoops.com national Division III poll.

Zuiker is averaging 15 minutes per game as a reserve for the Pointers (3-1). He is averaging 3 points and 1.8 rebounds per game, and is 3-for-5 shooting from 3-point range. He had a season-high eight points in a win over St. Olaf on Nov. 18.
