STRATFORD – Wausau Newman Catholic outscored Stratford by a basket in each half to eke out a 44-40 victory over the Tigers in the Marawood Conference South Division boys basketball opener for both teams on Friday night at Stratford High School.
Newman is now 5-1 overall, while Stratford falls to 2-3 after its second-straight loss.
Nick Stoflet made 6 of 8 free throws and scored 14 points, and Derrick Schmidt hit all six of his field goal attempts and had 12 points for Stratford.
Dane Fronek led Newman with 18 points and nine rebounds.
Stratford plays at Auburndale on Tuesday.
