Marathon outlasts Spencer boys basketball despite 29 points for Pilz

MARATHON – Marathon ran out to a nine-point lead by halftime and held off Spencer 53-46 in a nonconference boys basketball game Monday night at Marathon High School.

Bobby Pilz was on fire for Spencer (2-1), scoring 29 points on 9 of 14 shooting, including 6 of 10 from 3-point range, but the rest of the Rockets were just 4 of 26 from the field and 0-for-10 on 3-pointers. Pilz also added a team-high seven rebounds.

Preston Wirkus has 16 points to lead Marathon (3-1), which shot 50 percent (22 of 44) from the field and held a 34-25 rebounding advantage.

Spencer plays at Granton on Tuesday.
