MARSHFIELD – Brian Root scored 2:38 into the second period ending a wild first 19½ minutes to put Merrill on top for good as the Bluejays downed Marshfield 3-2 in a Wisconsin Valley Conference boys hockey game Tuesday night at the Marshfield Youth Ice Arena.
Joe Ladewig and Root scored in the first period to put Merrill (1-6-1, 1-1 Wisconsin Valley Conference) up 2-0.
Marshfield scored twice in the first 1:47 of the second period to even it up.
Isaac Wellens scored off assists from Ryan Krueger and Justin Stanek, and Tyler Spaeth scored on an assist from Klaus Friedli, to tie the game at 2-2.
However, just 51 seconds later, Root scored his second goal of the game to put the Bluejays up 3-2, and neither team scored over the final 32 minutes.
Scott Berg had 18 saves in goal for Marshfield (2-7-1, 0-4 Wisconsin Valley Conference).
Marshfield outshot Merrill 35-21, but Bryce Broeking saved 33 of them for the Bluejays.
Marshfield’s next game is at Sparta on Dec. 29.
