CHIPPEWA FALLS – Ema Fehrenbach and Hannah Meverden had double-doubles, and the Marshfield girls basketball team overcame a slow start to beat Chippewa Falls 50-37 in a nonconference game Tuesday night at Chippewa Falls High School.
McKayla Scheuer scored 16 points, Fehrenbach had 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Meverden had 12 points and 14 rebounds for Marshfield, which improves to 10-1.
The Tigers, ranked sixth in this week’s Wissports.net Division 1 state coaches poll, were 24 of 29 from the free throw line. Fehrenbach was 10 of 10 and Scheuer 6 of 6 at the charity stripe.
Marshfield led 16-14 before pulling away in the second half on the strength of its free throw shooting.
The Tigers shot just 26 percent (12 of 46) and committed 16 turnovers, but held Chippewa Falls (7-4) to 23 percent shooting (13 of 56) and forced 17 turnovers.
“I challenge Ema, Hannah and McKayla at halftime and they responded big time with both big shots and rebounds,” Marshfield coach Heidi Michaelis said. “Maddie Nikolai and Dani Bender did a great job making (Lexi) Hanley work hard for her points.”
Hanley, Chippewa Falls’ leading scoring at 17 points per game, was held to 11 on 4 of 14 shooting.
Marshfield’s next game is Thursday at Merrill.
