MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield boys basketball team executed to near perfection on both ends of the court and went on to defeat Wausau East 61-44 on Friday night at The Boson Company Fieldhouse at Marshfield High School.

The Tigers won for the fourth time in their last five games to improve to 7-5 overall and 2-3 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference. Marshfield also handed Wausau East its first conference loss as the Lumberjacks drop to 9-2 overall and 4-1 in the conference.

Back-to-back 3-pointers from Alec Hinson and Adam Fravert put Marshfield up 25-20 with 5:46 to go in the first half and the Tigers never trailed again.

A basket at the buzzer by Trevor Schwecke put Marshfield up 30-23 at halftime. East scored the first basket of the second half, but never got closer than five the rest of the game.

“We played defense as hard as we could,” Fravert said. “They run a lot of ball screens and we worked on playing off the ball screens all week. We needed a win and came in expecting a win, and that’s what we got.”

Fravert and Ethan Voss hit consecutive 3-pointers to spark a 10-0 run that also included four free throws.

Marshfield made 13 straight free throws in the second half before missing its last three, but it was more than enough to keep the Lumberjacks at bay.

An alley-oop dunk from Hinson to Fravert ended the scoring for the Tigers.

Marshfield coach Scott Scheuer said he was happy with the way the Tigers responded after a tough three-point loss at D.C. Everest on Tuesday.

“I was happy with our defense on Tuesday,” Scheuer said. “We’re just looking for consistency.”

Fravert finished with 14 points and Hinson had 12 for the Tigers, who had eight different players score.

JP Lacy topped Wausau East with 20 points, eight coming at the free throw line in the second half.

“I’ve seen Lacy go off for 28, 26 – he’s a good player and we worked hard tonight (against him),” Scheuer said. “He can freelance. He had 12 points (outside of free throws), that’s fine.”

Marshfield’s next game is next Friday, Jan. 22, at home against Wausau West.
