Auburndale boys basketball drops home game to Newman Catholic

AUBURNDALE – Wausau Newman Catholic jumped out to a 15-point lead by halftime and went on to defeat Auburndale 65-47 in a Marawood Conference South Division boys basketball game Friday night at Auburndale High School.

The Apaches shot just 33 percent (20-for-60) from the field, including 1 of 13 from 3-point range, and made just six of 12 free throws to see their two-game winning streak stopped.

Christian Firnstahl had 15 points and eight rebounds, and Nicholas Steele added 12 points for Auburndale (3-7, 1-5 Marawood South).

Dane Fronek had 21 points and nine rebounds for Newman (10-4, 4-2 Marawood South). The Cardinals, which pulled out to a 36-21 lead by halftime, were 28 of 59 shooting and made five 3-pointers.

Auburndale hosts Spencer on Tuesday as part of a girls-boys doubleheader. The girls game starts at 6 p.m. with the boys to follow at approximately 7:45 p.m.
