WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Derrick Schmidt scored 11 points, including the game-winning basket as time expired, to push the Stratford boys basketball team to a hard-fought 32-30 victory over Wisconsin Rapids Assumption in a low-scoring Marawood Conference South Division game Thursday at Assumption High School.
With the score tied at 30-30, Assumption missed two free throws with 14 seconds left. Stratford got the rebound and after advancing to half court, called timeout with 7.3 seconds left. Nick Stoflet got to the rim and missed, but Schmidt put it back in at the buzzer to give the Tigers the win.
Stratford is now 9-7 overall and 5-4 in the Marawood South, while Assumption falls to 9-8 and 6-4 in the conference.
Stratford’s win, combined with Auburndale’s victory over Pittsville and Marathon’s win against Wausau Newman Catholic, clinches the Marawood South title for Marathon.
Ethan Nagel added eight points for Stratford.
The Tigers’ next game is Tuesday at home against Pittsville.
