MARSHFIELD – Payton Nelson had three hits and scored three times, and Grant Hill struck out seven over four innings to lift Wausau West to a 9-3 win over Marshfield in the Wisconsin Valley Conference opener for both teams Tuesday at Reeths Field.
Zach Pearson also had three hits and drove in two runs, and Travis Lang hit a solo home run for the Warriors, who were playing in their season-opener.
Jake Brueggen suffered the loss for the Tigers (0-3 overall) after giving up four runs – three earned – and seven hits in 4 1/3 innings. He struck out four and didn’t walk a batter.
The Tigers were limited to three hits, singles by Braden Bohman, Paul Maguire and Hunter Korger. Maguire’s hit drove in two runs for Marshfield.
Marshfield plays at Wausau West on Thursday.
