SPENCER – Mandie Schultz had an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift the Spencer softball team to a 4-3 victory over Greenwood in a Cloverbelt Conference East Division game Monday at Spencer High School.
Macie Weber struck out nine to earn the win for the Rockets, who are now 4-2 overall and 3-0 in the Cloverbelt East. Greenwood falls to 4-3 and 1-2 in the conference.
A key play for the Rockets came in the top of the first inning. Centerfielder Jenna Schober threw out a runner at the plate and Schultz, the catcher, turned and threw to third to get another Greenwood runner for a double play. Kristen Nigon followed with a two-run home run in the Indians’ next at-bat.
The double play helped limit the damage and Greenwood led 2-0 until Spencer moved ahead with a run in the fourth and two in the fifth.
The Indians tied the game when Nigon drove in another run in the top of the sixth before Schultz plated Lindsay Vaughan with the game-winner.
“I give Greenwood a lot of credit for playing a great game,” Spencer coach Jason Gorst said. “They really had us on the ropes and we are fortunate to come away with a win.
“Mandie came through with a big clutch hit at just the right time.”
Spencer hosts Gilman at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
