APPLETON – The Marshfield boys tennis team earned medals in six of the seven flights and finished second in the team standings at the Appleton West Invitational on Saturday.
Appleton North won the team title with 26 points, just three better than Marshfield.
The Tigers’ No. 3 doubles team of Isaac Houk and Luke Kaiser won the title, beating Kaukauna 7-6, 6-3, Appleton East 6-2, 6-1, and Appleton West 6-2, 7-6.
Marshfield’s No. 2 doubles team of Jared Draxler and Ayush Shukla was second, beating Sheboygan South 6-0, 6-0, and Kaukauna 6-3, 6-0, before losing in the finals to Appleton North 6-1, 6-1.
John Weisenberger was also second for the Tigers at No. 2 singles. He defeated Appleton West’s Mathias Rivinius 6-0, 6-0, and Kaukauna’s Trevor Hammen 6-1, 6-1, before falling to Appleton North’s Andrew Wilks 7-5, 6-2, in the championship match.
Sam Haessly was third at No. 3 singles and Craig Paulman took third at No. 4 singles for Marshfield. Also earning a medal for the Tigers was No. 1 singles player Derek Reckner, who won the consolation bracket title.
Marshfield’s No. 1 doubles team of Tyler Droste and John Fay won a match against Sheboygan South 6-0, 6-0, but lost in the consolation final to Kaukauna 6-2, 2-6, (10-5).
Marshfield will play at Stevens Point on Monday, D.C. Everest on Tuesday and Wausau East on Thursday before competing in the two-day Wausau West Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
