Athens softball player Hanna Ellenbecker has been voted as the WDLB-WOSQ Radio & MarshfieldAreaSports.com April High School Athlete of the Month.
The High School Athlete of the Month Award is sponsored by Marshfield Clinic, Cost Cutters Family Hair Care and Burt Trophy & Awards.
Varsity athletes from the following high schools are eligible to be nominated for the award: Abbotsford, Athens, Auburndale, Colby, Columbus Catholic, Edgar, Granton, Greenwood, Loyal, Marathon, Marshfield, Neillsville, Owen-Withee, Pittsville, Spencer, Stratford and Thorp.
Ellenbecker outlasted Marshfield softball player Jenna Jakobi by just five votes to win the monthly voting. Also nominated for the April award were Spencer baseball player Hunter Luepke and Pittsville baseball player Paul Downs.
Ellenbecker, a three-year starter and captain for Athens, hit .533 in April (16-for-30) with five doubles, 16 RBIs and 21 runs scored through games on April 28. On April 28, in a 20-0 win against Edgar, The Bluejays’ leftfielder, went 4-for-4 with her first two home runs of the season, scored five times and drove in five runs.
Ellenbecker joins Abbotsford volleyball player Makenzie Klieforth (September), Spencer/Columbus football player Noah Zastrow (October), Marshfield girls basketball player Ema Fehrenbach (November), Stratford wrestling Jeremy Schoenherr (December), Stratford girls basketball player Savannah Schillinger (January), Marshfield gymnast Emma Haugen (February) and Marshfield track athlete Calden Wojt (March), as winners of the monthly award during the 2015-16 school year.
