WAUSAU – The Marshfield boys and girls track and field teams will be well represented at Thursday’s sectional meet.
The Tigers girls had seven individuals qualify in 10 events and the boys had four individuals move on in five events with top four finishes at the WIAA Division 1 track regional Monday at Wausau West High School.
The Marshfield boys also qualified in three relay races and two girls relay teams moved on. Both the Marshfield boys and girls finished third in the team standings.
Leading the way for the boys was sophomore Jeremy Robinson, who won the 200 meters in 22.90 seconds and the triple jump with a leap of 43 feet, 6 inches.
Arthur Burkart also won a regional title for the Tigers, taking first in the 800 meters with a time of 2:02.37.
Robinson also teamed with Riley Gebelen, Logan Schmitz and Dan Stanley to take second in the 400 relay (44.30) and third in the 800 relay (1:33.37).
The 3,200 relay team of Kyle Meek, Dan Drach, Burkart and Colin Korlesky took third (8:26.91), Gebelen was fourth in the 100 (11.72) and Cale Schliesman was fourth in the discus (152-3) to round out Marshfield’s sectional qualifiers.
On the girls side, Marshfield had three girls qualify in two events each.
Kelsey Weigel was second in the discus (112-3) and long jump (17-2 ½); Michelle Theisen was second in the shot put (36-5 ¾) and third in the discus (101-4); and Ellen Stichert was second in both hurdles events – finishing the 100 hurdles in 17.09 and the 300 in 50.36.
Bisola Omoba was the only Marshfield girl to claim a regional title, winning the 100 in 13.44 seconds, edging teammate Gabriella Myrie by just 0.04 seconds.
The Tigers also got second place finishes from Nikki Youngblood in the 200 (28.36), the 400 relay team of Omoba, Youngblood, Miranda Snortheim and Myrie (51.55) and the 1,600 relay team of Alexa Fritsch, Stichert, Amanda Cousins and Weigel (4:19.59).
Kate Schumitsch also qualified for sectionals by taking fourth in the pole vault (9-0).
“We have our work cut out for us, but we have some exceptional athletes that have advanced and I like our chances on Thursday at East,” Marshfield girls coach Dan Akin said.
The sectional meet will be Thursday at Wausau East. The top three in each event will move on to the WIAA State Track and Field Championships on June 4-5 at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
