MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield Columbus Catholic soccer team continued its early-season assault with a dominating 9-0 wipeout of Wausau Newman Catholic in a Mid-State Soccer Conference game Thursday at Griese Park.

The Dons scored four times in the first half and added three more goals in the first 6 minutes of the second half on their way to the rout.

Charles Payant scored the Dons’ first goal 4:16 into the game and assisted on three others. Nadim Torbey scored twice and six other players also scored for Columbus Catholic, which is now 7-0 overall and 3-0 in the MSSC. Newman drops to 0-3 and 0-2 in the conference.

The Dons controlled play throughout, outshooting Newman 15-1 on goal. The Cardinals’ only shot came midway through the second half as Columbus was able to keep them away with a stellar defensive effort.

“It was a good game tonight where we were able to get a lot of players in the mix and let them play some new positions,” Columbus Catholic coach Jeff Edwards said.

Tyler Fuerlinger headed in a shot off a corner kick from Evan Dieringer in the 19th minute, Torbey scored on a breakaway and Zach Olson knocked in a goal off a throw-in pass from Payant to put the Dons up 4-0 at the half.

Nick Malovrh, Torbey and Calvin Brown added goals in the first 6 minutes of the second half, and Ella Schultz and Alex Giles finished off the scoring for Columbus, which has posted a shutout in five of its seven victories.

“There has been a lot of variety in goals and assists,” Edwards said. “We don’t have that really outstanding player again, we just have a lot of players that can put it in the net. That makes it really difficult to defend us because anyone can score on any given night.”
