MARSHFIELD – Marshfield took a two-goal lead early in the second half but couldn’t hold off a late rally from Wausau East and had to settle for a 2-2 tie in a Wisconsin Valley Conference boys soccer game Tuesday at Griese Park.
Marshfield’s Hunter McManus scored just 1:34 into the game, on an assist from Klaus Friedli, and that lead held through the rest of the first half.
Collin Nikolai added a goal for the Tigers (4-5-2, 2-3-1 Wisconsin Valley Conference) 5:17 into the second half before East mounted a comeback.
Nick Lange scored in the 66th minute and Adam Hahn connected on a penalty kick with 9:55 to go to bring the Lumberjacks even. Neither team was able to hit a game-winner in the closing minutes.
Jared Klein had five saves in goal for Marshfield.
“It was a game of lost opportunities with multiple scoring chances missed, missed runners in the slot, missed field reversals to backside, and missed opportunities when the ball did get to backside,” Marshfield coach Steve McCann said. “On the positive side, we are sorting things out better defensively and limiting other teams’ opportunities.”
The Tigers will host Wausau West in a WVC game at 5 p.m. Thursday at Griese Park.
