WISCONSIN RAPIDS – The Marshfield Columbus Catholic volleyball team ran into four-time defending Division 4 state champion Wausau Newman Catholic and came out on the short end, falling 3-0 in a WIAA Division 4 sectional semifinal Thursday night at Assumption High School.
Newman Catholic won 25-7, 25-20, 25-19, ending the Dons’ season.
Newman will play Bowler in a sectional final at Stevens Point Area Senior High on Saturday night for a berth in the 2016 WIAA State Girls Volleyball Tournament in Green Bay on Nov. 3-5.
Kendra Bailer had 11 kills, Annie Baierl had five digs, and Natalie Pospyhalla had 14 assists to lead the Dons in each category.
Celine Scholin added seven kills and Jennifer Reigel chipped in eight assists for Columbus.
“We played with heart tonight and gave Newman everything we could,” Columbus coach Kat Egle said. “They are a strong team and we stayed with them as long as we could receive their serves. The seniors (Reigel, Pospyhalla, Scholin, Kendra Baierl, Maddie DeSmet, ad Sierra Litwaitis) will be missed and they have helped turn around our volleyball program. We have had a successful season with winning the first ever regional title, being second in the conference, and with six all-conference players. We look forward to many successful years to come.”
