MADISON – The 2016 WIAA state football championship games was held Nov. 17-18 with seven divisional championship games at Camp Randall Stadium.
Kimberly captured its fourth-straight state title and ran its Wisconsin-record winning streak to 56 games with a 29-14 come-from-behind win over Franklin in the Division 1 championship game. The Papermakers trailed 14-0 at halftime before ripping off four unanswered touchdowns. Kimberly won the Division 2 title in 2013 and three D-1 titles in a row.
The Division 3 state title matchup between Green Bay Notre Dame and Waukesha Catholic Memorial was a rematch of last year’s championship game that Notre Dame won. Memorial avenged the loss with a 24-14 win.
Amherst defended its Division 5 state title with a 38-35 win over Cedar Grove-Belgium.
In Division 6, Darlington lost in the title game for the fourth-straight year.
Edgar won its seventh state title by winning the Division 7 championship, a 36-6 win over Shullsburg. The title goes along with six previous championships won by longtime coach Jerry Sinz. Edgar won the Division 4 title in 1979, took the D-5 crown in 1992, 1999 and 2001, and the Division 6 championship in 2009 and 2010.
