Columbus Catholic girls basketball sneaks past Colby

COLBY – Morgan Albrecht scored a game-high 16 points to lift the Marshfield Columbus Catholic girls basketball team to a narrow 48-47 victory over Colby in the Cloverbelt Conference East Division opener for both teams on Friday night at Colby High School.

Columbus Catholic (2-0 overall) led 23-15 at halftime and had to hold off the Hornets at the end. Colby was playing its first game of the season.

Columbus led by as much as 13 before Colby stormed back to tie the game with one minute left.

Ashley Streveler made one of two free throws with 13.1 seconds to go to put the Hornets up by one.

Baylie Neider was fouled with 5.9 seconds to go and made both free throws to push the Dons to a one-point lead, but Columbus fouled Carley Elmhorst with 1.9 seconds left. However, Elmhorst missed both free throws and time ran out after Kendra Baierl grabbed the rebound for the Dons.

Baierl added 10 points and 15 rebounds, and Maren Seefluth had eight points and 12 rebounds for the Dons.

The Dons held a big advantage at the free throw line, going 23-for-34, while Colby was just 10 of 24.

Columbus Catholic plays another Cloverbelt East game at Spencer on Tuesday.
