STOUGHTON – The Marshfield wrestling team opened its 2016-17 season by winning three of five dual meets at the Pieper Duals on Saturday at Stoughton High School.
Marshfield beat Evansville 70-12, Madison La Follette 65-12, and Athens 47-27, and lost to Stoughton 43-23 and Fennimore 45-20.
Stoughton won all five of its matches to take the team title.
Nolan Hertel (145 pounds) and Alex Brost (182) went a perfect 5-0 for Marshfield. Both recorded three pins and a major decision among their victories.
Anthony Kanable (138), Bentley Ostermann (160) and Connor Peterson (195) were 4-1 for the Tigers. Kanable had three pins and Ostermann had one and two major decisions.
“For our first event of the season, I am extremely proud of how we performed today,” Marshfield coach Jackson Hein said. “We were not perfect, but we are making big improvements. Last year we went 1-4 in this dual meet tournament, so it’s good to see us in the top three at this tournament. We are still a very young team that has a ton of potential, but need to continue to make improvements throughout the week.”
Marshfield will compete in a dual meet at Rhinelander on Thursday.
