MARATHON – Marathon handed the Stratford girls basketball team its first loss of the season, edging the Tigers 39-38 in a Marawood Conference South Division battle Thursday night at Marathon High School.
Marathon led 31-18 at halftime before the Tigers stormed back to make it close, holding the Raiders to just three made baskets and eight points in the second half, but it wasn’t enough.
With the victory, Marathon takes control of first place in the Marawood South at 4-0 and improves to 6-1 overall. Stratford drops to 8-1 and 4-1 in the conference.
Andie Zueke had 10 of her team-high 14 points in the second half for Stratford before fouling out. Sammy Griesbach had all of her 10 points in the final 18 minutes for the Tigers.
Stratford made 20 of 26 free throws to account for more than half of its points.
Amanda Kind led Marathon with 14 points, all of them coming in the first half.
The Tigers will compete at the Bangor Tournament, playing Bangor on Tuesday and Westby next Wednesday.
