MARSHFIELD – Loyal limited Columbus Catholic to 14 points in the first half and held on from there, beating the Dons 48-43 in a battle of second-place teams in the Cloverbelt Conference East Division girls basketball standings on Friday at Columbus Catholic High School.
Both teams came into the game with 5-1 records in the Cloverbelt East.
Loyal led 20-14 at halftime and Columbus outscored the Dons by one in the second half, but couldn’t completely erase the deficit.
Morgan Reinwand scored 24 points, including 3 of 8 from 3-point range, to lead Loyal (7-2 overall). The Dons held Loyal’s top scorer, Karsyn Rueth, to just nine points.
“Maren Seefluth and Zoey Stratman did a great job on defense on Karsyn Rueth, only allowing her nine points where she averages 20 points per game,” Columbus coach Rhonda Keding said. “This was a solid defensive effort. The girls were aware where Karsyn was on the court and Zoe and Maren only allowed her to 2-for-7 from the field and 0-for-2 from the 3-point line.”
Natalie Pospyhalla had 11 points and Morgan Albrecht added 10 for the Dons.
Both teams shot under 30 percent from the field, with the difference coming at the free throw line as the Greyhounds outscored Columbus 14-7.
