MARSHFIELD – A relentless defensive effort and an efficient offense led the Marshfield boys basketball team to its first Wisconsin Valley Conference victory of the season on Friday night as the Tigers rolled past D.C. Everest 79-43 at Marshfield High School.

The Tigers jumped out to a 10-2 lead to start the game, and after D.C. Everest responded with six points in a row, Marshfield scored 11 of the next 13 points to take control.

Seth Anderson scored six of his 19 points in the 11-2 run that pushed Marshfield (4-6, 1-2 Wisconsin Valley Conference) to a 21-10 advantage.

A 3-pointer from Reed Miller, who returned from injury to score eight points, and another hoop by Anderson made it 26-12 and Marshfield led by double digits the rest of the way.

Marshfield shot 62 percent (31 of 50) from the field and forced 20 turnovers, including a number of steals by anticipating Everest passes and leading to numerous fast-break points.

“They got after it and I’m really proud of them for that,” Marshfield coach Scott Scheuer said. “It was a tremendous effort (defensively). We’ve had a few games like that, but we weren’t efficient on the offensive end. Sometimes when you work hard on the defensive end and don’t convert on offense, it’s hard to go back down now and put that same effort in again and again.

“Tonight we were able to execute on offense, score, and then you get tons of energy.”

Marshfield led 36-22 at halftime and poured it on during the final 18 minutes.

After an Everest (5-5, 0-2 WVC) basket, Marshfield went on a 12-0 run. Ethan Posteluk hit a 3-pointer and scored six of his 19 points in the run for the Tigers.

Everest ended the run on a basket with 11:07 to go and Marshfield quickly turned it back on, scoring the next 12 points. The 24-2 run pushed the Tigers to a 34-point advantage.

Eleven of the 12 Tigers on the roster scored in the game, something Scheuer was happy to see.

“Our upper classmen are understanding how important everybody is,” Scheuer said. “We have 12 guys on varsity and I don’t look at any of them as ‘this guy’s not as important as this guy.’ If it’s not in practice, it’s something off the floor. We’re fortunate that we have 12 guys, they’re all good guys, and they’re all important.”

Marshfield plays at Wisconsin Rapids on Saturday as part of a girls-boys doubleheader. The girls game starts at 6:45 p.m., with the boys to follow at approximately 8:15 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on WDLB-AM 1450 and wdlbwosq.com.
