Owen-Withee girls basketball player Jennifer Wendler has been voted as the WDLB-WOSQ Radio & MarshfieldAreaSports.com December High School Athlete of the Month.
The High School Athlete of the Month Award is sponsored by Marshfield Clinic, Cost Cutters Family Hair Care and Burt Trophy & Awards.
Varsity athletes from the following high schools are eligible to be nominated for the award: Abbotsford, Athens, Auburndale, Colby, Columbus Catholic, Edgar, Granton, Greenwood, Loyal, Marathon, Marshfield, Neillsville, Owen-Withee, Pittsville, Spencer, Stratford and Thorp.
Wendler received 974 of the more than 2,500 votes cast during voting at MarshfieldAreaSports.com from Jan. 1-7.
Other nominees for the December award were Loyal boys basketball player Riley Geiger, Neillsville girls basketball player Kayla Lis, Marshfield wrestler Bentley Ostermann, Marshfield Columbus Catholic boys basketball player Hunter Schultz, and Stratford girls basketball player Andie Zuelke.
Wendler, a 6-foot-2 sophomore, has been a scoring matching for the Blackhawks. In six games in December, five of them wins, Wendler scored more than 20 points four times, including a career-high 37 points in a win over Greenwood on Dec. 22, and 27 in a 13-point victory over Columbus Catholic on Dec. 9. Wendler is averaging 22.8 points per game overall this season for the Blackhawks, who were 6-2 heading into January.
Wendler joins Columbus Catholic volleyball player Kendra Baierl (September), Columbus Catholic soccer player Nadim Torbey (October), and Abbotsford football player Ethan Kramas (November) as winners of the award during the 2016-17 school year.
