A number of former local high school athletes have moved on to the next level and are playing sports collegiately across the country.
Periodically, MarshfieldAreaSports.com will publish a College Sports Roundup updating readers of some of those local athletes’ exploits at the collegiate level.
This edition takes a look at a pair of former Marshfield teammates that are now competing in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
Oestreich starting for Platteville
Matt Oestreich, a 2014 graduate of Marshfield High School, is in his third year as a starting point guard for the University of Wisconsin-Platteville men’s basketball team.
Oestreich, a junior, has started 13 of the Pioneers’ 16 games this season, scoring in double figures eight times. He missed last Saturday’s game at UW-Whitewater, which Platteville lost 68-66, and Wednesday’s victory over UW-Stevens Point.
He is averaging 9.5 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.4 assists this season for Platteville. He scored a season-high 16 points in a loss to Loras College on Dec. 17.
Platteville began the season 5-1, but lost five in a row before beating UW-Stevens Point 76-71 on Wednesday. The Pioneers are now 8-8 overall and 1-4 in the WIAC. The Pioneers host UW-La Crosse this Saturday.
Zuiker finds playing time at Point
Luke Zuiker, a 2014 graduate of Marshfield High School, is a junior reserve on the UW-Stevens Point men’s basketball team.
Zuiker has played in 12 of the Pointers’ 15 games this season, coming off the bench in each. He is averaging 8 minutes, 3.4 points and 1.2 rebounds per game. Zuiker has made 8 of 15 shots from 3-point range and is shooting 51.7 percent overall from the field. He did not play in Wednesday’s loss to UW-Platteville.
Zuiker had a career-high 11 points in a win over Lynchburg (Va.) College at a tournament in Maryland on Nov. 19.
UWSP is 8-7 overall and 2-3 in the WIAC. The Pointers host UW-Eau Claire on Saturday.
