LA CROSSE – Spencer earned a pair medals and Auburndale grabbed another Saturday at the WIAA State Track and Field Championships in La Crosse.
Spencer freshman Tara Matter was the silver medalist in the Division 3 girls triple jump with a leap of 36 feet, 5 3/4 inches. She finished second to Independence/Gilmanton’s Bria Halama, who jumped 37 feet, 2 inches.
Spencer junior Marcie Hebert earned another medal for the Rockets, finishing fourth in the Division 3 girls discus with a throw of 118 feet, 10 inches. The event was won by Kailee Kamps of Belmont with a toss of 132-7.
Auburndale junior Kelly Tomfohrde was fifth in the Division 3 girls pole vault Saturday morning with a vault of 9-9. Marawood Conference rival Faryn Wirkus of Edgar took the gold medal with a vault of 11-6.
Four other area entrants did not medal in their events Saturday.
Spencer’s Tyler Kolstad, who was seeded second in the Division 3 boys high jump, finished 11th out of 17 entries with a leap of 5-10.
The Stratford 3,200 boys relay team of Matt Zuelke, Steve Wenzel, Tylyn Hoover and Mark Marquardt finished 15th out of 18 teams with a time of 8:27.55, nearly three seconds slower than its time at the sectional last week.
Auburndale’s Danica Harrison, who just missed earning a medal on Friday when she finished seventh in the 3,200-meter run, took 12th Saturday in the Division 3 1,600 meters with a time of 5:29.89. Molly Seidl of University Lake School set the pace, winning with a time of 5:06.39.
The Stratford girls 800 relay team of Alyssa Fisher, Karissa Kaiser, Josie Kolbeck and Toshia Spindler finished eighth with a time of 1:51.41, 7.04 seconds behind the winning team from Edgar.
As a whole, the Marawood Conference competed very well, with the Edgar girls winning the Division 3 state team title with ease, compiling 114 points. Wausau Newman Catholic was a distant second with 42 points.
Milwaukee Bradley Tech won the Division 1 girls title and Green Bay Notre Dame won the Division 2 championship.
Boys team state titles were won by Mequon Homestead in Division 1, Whitewater in Division 2 and Brookfield Academy in Division 3.
