SPENCER – Stratford scored three runs in the top of the first inning and held off a late rally to beat Spencer 5-2 in a nonconference softball game Friday at Spencer High School.
The game was the season-opener for both teams.
Stratford pushed its lead to 5-0 with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
Spencer scored twice in the bottom of the seventh but came up short in its comeback bid.
Brittany Bredemann went 4-for-4 with two runs scored, and Sammy Griesbach and Courtney Kaiser each had two hits in the win for the Tigers.
Kiana Weiler tossed a complete game, striking out six and allowing five hits and one walk to earn the win for Stratford.
Tiffany Meinders struck out 11 for Spencer.
“We got off to a bit of a rough start, but we played better as the game went on,” Spencer coach Jason Gorst said. “Stratford played a very fundamentally solid game. They should be a good team this year.”
Stratford makes a quick turnaround and plays a doubleheader at Poynette on Saturday against Poynette and Monona Grove.
Spencer hosts Eau Claire Regis in nonconference action on Monday.
