SPENCER – The Spencer softball team dropped its third-straight game to start the season, falling at home to Westfield 7-5 in a nonconference game Thursday at Spencer High School.
Westfield (4-2) led 5-0 after 4½ innings and 7-1 after scoring twice in the top of the seventh before the Rockets started to mount a comeback.
Spencer scored four times in the bottom of the seventh inning but its rally came up short.
“We have had a bit of a trend where we don’t get going till late in the game,” Spencer coach Jason Gorst said. “We have to just stick with things and find a way to be more productive earlier in the game.”
Tiffany Meinders took the loss for Spencer, striking out nine and allowing 14 hits in a complete-game effort.
Cinnamin Harwood and Katie Fleischman each had two hits for Spencer (0-3).
Spencer plays a nonconference game at Chequamegon on Monday.
