MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield baseball team dropped its home opener, losing 3-2 to Menomonie in eight innings in a nonconference game Saturday at Hackman Field.
Jake Brueggen threw all eight innings for the Tigers (2-1), scattering nine hits in the loss. He struck out eight and walked two.
Menomonie (3-5) scored twice in the top of the fifth inning only to see the Tigers tie it on a two-run single by Brandon Montalvo in the bottom of the sixth that scored pinch runner Andy Goettl and Paul Maguire.
Menomonie scored in the top of the eight and held Marshfield scoreless in the bottom of the frame to finish off the victory.
“Jake pitched a great game,” Marshfield coach Jon Bauer said. “We just couldn’t get enough runs. It’s a tough loss but we’ve got to move on and get ready for the next one.”
Braden Bohman and Montalvo each had two hits for the Tigers.
Marshfield returns to action Tuesday at Wisconsin Rapids. Game time at Witter Field is 4:30 p.m.
