SCHOFIELD – Marshfield will have three athletes moving on to the state meet after earning top-three finishes at the WIAA Division 1 Track & Field Sectional on Thursday at Stiehm Stadium at D.C. Everest Junior High.

Marshfield junior Meg Bryan won the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 2¾ inches, to win the sectional title. She will be joined at state in the event by teammate Gracie Holland, a freshman, who finished third with a jump of 16-8¾.

Marshfield junior Skyler Theisen also will move on to state as he placed third in the 300-meter hurdles in 40.60 seconds.

The top three in each event at the sectional qualify for the 2017 WIAA State Track & Field Championships at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on June 2-3.

The Tigers also had a number of close calls.

Senior Alexa Aumann, the regional champion on Monday at Wausau East, finished fourth in 2:22.41, which was just ¾ of a second behind the third place finisher.

Another regional champion, Stephanie Rhodes, finished fourth in the high jump after having a jump-off for third place with Caroline Becker of Superior. After tying at 5 feet with the same number of misses, both jumpers hit 5-1, missed at 5-2, before Becker nailed another jump at 5-1 and Rhodes missed.

Marshfield freshman Madysen Bohman was fifth in the 400 in 1:01.80, 2½ seconds out of the final state qualifying spot, and Bryan took fifth in the triple jump (34-11¼), 9½ inches short of a state trip.

“We are so pleased that Meg and Gracie are representing our school at state,” Marshfield girls track coach Dan Akin said. “We are also so disappointed for the girls who just missed out today placing fourth in their events.

“Our seniors, Alexa Aumann, Stephanie Rhodes and Maddie Nikolai, have meant so much to this program the last four years. They have done everything we’ve asked of them and been perfect examples of what we want the younger girls to want to strive to become. We are truly saddened that their seasons ended tonight.”
