MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield American Junior Legion baseball team opened its 2017 campaign with a split of a doubleheader against Wausau on Tuesday at Jack Hackman Field.
The Junior Blue Devils beat Wausau 9-5 in the opener before dropping Game 2 by a score of 6-3.
Marshfield trailed 4-1 in Game 1 before exploding for a six-run fifth inning to take the lead.
Ryan Krueger had three hits and two RBIs, Tyler Spaeth also had three hits, and Mason Coffren had a triple drove in a pair of runs for Marshfield.
Ty Pankratz earned the win, getting the final two outs of the fifth. Coffren started, allowing four runs and five walks in 4 2/3 innings with eight strikeouts. Will Voss allowed one run in the final 1 2/3 innings to earn the save.
Marshfield will host Stevens Point for a doubleheader beginning at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Hackman Field.
The varsity game, which was to be Marshfield’s season-opener, on Thursday at Stevens Point has been postponed due to the Point High School team playing in the WIAA sectionals on Tuesday. No make-up date has been announced.
