MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield Post 54 Junior American Legion baseball team swept a pair of games to open its annual home tournament on Friday night.
Marshfield beat South Wood County 18-6 and Sheboygan 6-5 to earn a spot in Saturday’s championship game.
Against South Wood County, Marshfield scored nine runs in the top of the third to erase a four-run deficit, and ended the game via the 10-run rule with a six-run fifth innings.
Riley Boushack, Logan Griesbach, Tyler Spaeth and Ben Gust each had two RBIs in the win.
Marshfield trailed Sheboygan 5-1 in its second game Friday night before rallying with five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to grab a spot in Saturday’s championship game.
Mason Coffren scored on an error, Spaeth doubled home Jacob Earll, Matt Handrick had an RBI groundout, and Caden Schillinger had an RBI single to tie it and scored on an error to put the Blue Devils ahead.
Handrick earned the win in relief as he gave up two runs in four innings. Spaeth and Mitch Wilhelm each had two hits for Marshfield.
In other games Friday, Chippewa Falls beat La Crosse 13-2 and Pittsville 9-8 to advance to the first-place game against Marshfield (14-5) at approximately 5 p.m. Saturday.
The tournament continues Saturday with five games. La Crosse plays Pittsville at 9 a.m., followed by South Wood County against Sheboygan at approximately 11 a.m.
The third-place game will be at approximately 1 p.m., with the second-place and first-place games to follow that at Hackman Field.
