WAUPACA – The Wisconsin Valley Union girls hockey team, a co-op of Stevens Point, Wisconsin Rapids, Marshfield, Stevens Point Pacelli, Iola-Scandinavia, Amherst and Waupaca high schools, won its season-opener Tuesday night, beating the Central Wisconsin Storm 2-1 at the Waupaca Expo Center.
Kendra Robinson and Markie Ash scored in the first period to provide WVU with a 2-0 lead.
The Storm cut it in half when Emma Kysely scored 4 minutes into the second period, but that was all they would get against Union goalie Pistol Cowden, who had 36 saves.
Wisconsin Valley Union will be back in action Dec. 1 and Dec. 2 with home games at Waupaca against the Fox Valley Stars and Stoughton.
