Fall sports practices start this week

The 2010-11 school year may not officially begin for a few weeks, but for many area high school athletes, the fall season starts this week.

Girls golf and boys soccer teams begin practice on Monday, and girls tennis, girls swimming and football teams start practice Tuesday.

Cross country and girls volleyball teams begin practice on Monday, Aug. 16.

Some teams won’t have long to prepare, as the girls golf season for the Marshfield Tigers starts with a two-day tournament at Wisconsin Dells on Thursday and Friday.

The Marshfield and Columbus Catholic boys soccer teams will play its first games on Aug. 17.

The Marshfield girls swim team has its first meet at home against Holmen on Thursday, Aug. 19.

The Marshfield volleyball team hosts a six-team tournament on Aug. 24, while Columbus Catholic opens its season Aug. 28 at the Diocesan Tournament in Chippewa Falls on Aug. 28. Spencer also begins on Aug. 24, with a tournament at Stanley-Boyd. Stratford starts Aug. 26 at the Stevens Point Tournament.

Football season begins Aug. 27. Marshfield hosts Menomonie, Auburndale is at Stratford, and Spencer/Columbus opens its season at home against Edgar.

The Marshfield girls tennis team opens its season Aug. 17 at the Neenah Invitational.

The Columbus Catholic, Stratford and Spencer cross country teams open its seasons at the Pittsville Invite on Aug. 26, while Marshfield will start its season at the Columbus Invitational at Wildwood Park on Sept. 4. The Marshfield Invitational, also at Wildwood Park, is Sept. 7.
