MARSHFIELD – Marshfield scored three unanswered goals in the third period, the final one coming short-handed, and defeated Waupaca 3-2 in a nonconference boys hockey game Tuesday at the Marshfield Youth Ice Arena.
Waupaca (1-4) took a 2-0 lead with a pair of goals in the second period before Marshfield (3-5) roared back.
Adam Maki scored 54 seconds in the third period on a power play, Ben Lawyer tied it with a goal at the 4:59 mark, and Ryan Krueger provided the game-winner with a short-handed goal with 7:01 remaining in the game.
A.J. Trierweiler had 29 saves in goal for Marshfield.
“We finally broke through in the third period,” Marshfield coach Eric Bowman said. “Our power-play came through in an important moment of the game, and we gave up no short-handed goals.
“Special teams are important and we took steps in the right direction tonight there. Our team played the brand of hockey we have been looking to establish all season in the third period, and came back from two goals down against a hard-working Waupaca team.”
Marshfield hosts its annual tournament this week at the Marshfield Youth Ice Arena. The Tigers will host Chequamegon at 7:15 p.m. Friday, and play a pair of games Saturday against the WSFLG (Webster, Siren, Frederic, Luck, Grantsburg) Blizzard at 12:15 p.m. and Eau Claire Regis at 6:15 p.m.
