Marshfield soccer ties again

TOMAH – Marshfield scored early and nearly held off Tomah the rest of the way, but the Timberwolves found the back of the net with 5:38 left and tied the Tigers 1-1 in a nonconference boys soccer game on Thursday.

Colin Telin split the defense with a pass from the left side and Alex Kelnhofer connected for a goal at the 7:17 mark to give the Tigers (1-0-2) an early 1-0 lead.

Marshfield’s defense did enough to keep the Timberwolves at bay, holding to Tomah to just four shots on goal in the game.

However, Brian McCarthy got one past Marshfield goalkeeper Erik Holm (three saves) at the 74:22 mark to tie the game.

Marshfield had a chance with about 20 minutes left to extend its lead, but failed, and Tigers coach Ron Todryk said he felt they missed an opportunity to pick up another win.

“We should have won this,” Todryk said. “We got sloppy a little too much in this game. We were taking a few too many chances and trying things that we weren’t set up to do. We were trying to make the picture-perfect pass and 90 percent of the time the defense ends up with it.”

Marshfield opens its Wisconsin Valley Conference schedule Tuesday at Wausau West, then hosts Wausau East on Aug. 26. Todryk said the Tigers are going to have to play better than they did in their first three games to compete in the Valley.

“We’re going to have to rely on our defense until our offense figures out how to get our attack going,” Tordyk said. “We’re working together slowly. There are moments of brilliance on the field, but an occasional letdown keeps the other team in the game. We’ll have to step it up in conference.”
