WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Auburndale had four players score in double figures and held off Wisconsin Rapids Assumption 54-50 in a battle of Marawood Conference South Division boys basketball co-leaders on Tuesday night at Assumption High School.
Cooper Weinfurter and Cale Jacoby each scored 12 points, Cameron Ertl added 11 points with the help of three 3-pointers, and Cason Schmutzer chipped in 10 for Auburndale, which improves to 12-3 overall and 9-2 in the Marawood South.
Auburndale led 18-17 at halftime and held on despite shooting just 50 percent (10 of 20) at the free throw line, while Assumption made 14 of 17 free throws in second half.
Auburndale’s win breaks the three-way tie for first place in the Marawood South. The other co-leader, Marathon, whipped Wausau Newman Catholic on Tuesday to remain in a tie with the Apaches atop of the conference standings.
Joe Grundhoffer led Assumption (10-4, 8-3 Marawood South) with 22 points.
Auburndale hosts Spencer in a nonconference game Friday before playing at Marathon on Jan. 30.
