WAUPACA – The Wisconsin Valley Union girls hockey program, in its first year of existence, is one win away from the state tournament.
The Union scored twice in the final 6 minutes of the first period and held on from there, defeating Lakeland 4-1 in a WIAA sectional semifinal Wednesday night at the Waupaca Expo Center.
Alayna Bruneau and Kendra Robinson scored in the first period, and Anna Ryder added a goal 10:32 into the second to put Wisconsin Valley up 3-0.
After Lakeland scored early in the third period, Markie Ash added another goal for Wisconsin Valley at the 7-minute mark to put the game away.
Pistol Cowden had 14 saves in goal for the Union.
Wisconsin Valley, a co-op program consisting of players from Marshfield, Stevens Point, Wisconsin Rapids, and a number of other smaller Central Wisconsin schools, improves to 16-6-2 this season and will play a sectional final game at the 16-8 Central Wisconsin Storm (D.C. Everest/Wausau West/Wausau East/Mosinee co-op) on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the D.C. Everest Greenheck Ice Arena. The winner advances to the WIAA state tournament in Madison on March 2-3.
