MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield girls basketball team found itself in a defensive battle with New London in a WIAA Division 2 regional final Saturday night, but the Tigers did just enough in the second half to pull out a big victory.
After playing to a 14-14 tie in the first half, Marshfield outscored New London by eight in the second to grab a 37-29 win and advance to next week’s sectional.
Marshfield (12-12) will play No. 1 seed Hortonville (18-6) in a Division 2 sectional semifinal Thursday at Antigo. The winner moves into a sectional final at Menomonie on March 3.
Hortonville topped Marshfield 63-47 way back on No. 16 in the season-opener for both teams.
Both teams made just nine field goals in the game and the difference came at the free throw line. Marshfield made 15 of 25 at the line, while New London (13-12) were 8 of 14.
Marshfield senior guard Meg Bryan, who scored 23 points with seven 3-pointers in the Tigers’ win over Shawano on Friday, was stifled all game, attempting just one shot from the field, which she missed.
Fellow senior guard Corianne Johnson stepped up to score 10 points, which included two of the Tigers’ four 3-pointers, and Katie Osinski added eight points and nine rebounds in the win.
