PITTSVILLE – Stratford’s Matt Zuelke and Auburndale’s Danica Harrison started their seasons in prime fashion Thursday, rolling to easy wins at the Pittsville Cross Country Invitational.
Zuelke won the boys race with a time of 16:59.8, 9.1 seconds ahead of Cedric Lechleitner of Marathon.
Auburndale’s Luke Haas was fourth (17:31.6) and David Haas was fifth (17:54.9), as the Apaches finished second in the team standings behind Marathon.
Stratford was third, Marshfield Columbus Catholic was fifth and Spencer had an incomplete team.
Dan Schubert led the Rockets with a ninth-place finish in 18:48.8. Travis Wienke had Columbus’ top finish, taking 17th in 19:58.8.
Harrison led the Auburndale girls to a second-place finish behind Wisconsin Rapids Assumption. Harrison ran the course in a time of 15:54, winning by 19.5 seconds over Pittsville’s Tory Palmer. Sam Karl was fourth (17:11) and Emma Steines was 10th (18:23.9) for the Apaches.
Stratford finished in a tie for third with Pittsville as Rachel Adank was sixth in 18:10.9 and Megan Skwierczynski was eighth in 18:16.1.
Columbus Catholic had only three runners, but two finished in the top five. Claire Pinter ran in 16:41.7 to finish third, and Sarah Brandt was fifth in 18:07.21.
Spencer took fifth behind a seventh-place run by Samantha Hoeldtke (18:14.2).
Spencer will be in action again Tuesday at the Mosinee Invitational at Nine Mile Forest, Auburndale and Stratford’s next meet will be at the Marathon Invite on Sept. 2, and Columbus Catholic will have more than a week off before hosting the Columbus Invitational at Wildwood Park in Marshfield on Sept. 4.
