AUBURNDALE – The Auburndale boys basketball team held off a late Edgar run in the final minutes to pull off a 47-38 victory in a WIAA Division 4 regional final Saturday night at Auburndale High School.
The Apaches led 20-8 at halftime before Edgar got its offense together in the second half and cut Auburndale’s lead to four late. But the Apaches made enough free throws in the final 2 minutes to secure the victory and move on to sectionals.
Auburndale (20-4) will play another Marawood Conference South Division rival in Marathon (20-4) on Thursday at D.C. Everest High School in a D-4 sectional semifinal. Auburndale beat the Raiders twice this season, 63-61 at home on Dec. 19, and 56-52 at Marathon on Jan. 30.
Auburndale finished 19 of 25 at the free throw line to counter an unusual poor shooting performance (12-for-31) from the floor.
Cale Jacoby had 15 points and Colten Wright made three 3-pointers and finished with 11 points for Auburndale.
Oconto (19-5) will play Shiocton (18-5) in the other sectional semifinal Thursday at Bay Port. The sectional championship will be Saturday, March 10, at Wausau East.
