MADISON – The 103rd annual WIAA State Boys Basketball Tournament was held March 15-17 at the Kohl Center.
Five championship games were played Saturday, March 17.
Oshkosh North (27-1) won the Division 1 championship game, rolling past Brookfield East 61-44. It is the first state title for North, which was making its seventh state appearance. Tyrese Haliburton, an Iowa State recruit, scored 30 points for North, making 18 of 18 at the free throw line, a new state record for free throws made without a miss in a state tournament game.
Kaukauna (25-3) won a thrilling Division 2 championship game over Milwaukee Washington 76-74. It is the second state title for the Ghosts, who are coached by Marshfield High School graduate Mike Schalow. Kaukauna also won a D-2 title in 2016. Senior guard Jordan McCabe scored eight of his game-high 32 points in the final minute, including a game-winning layup with 3 seconds to go. McCabe, a West Virginia recruit, also had 10 assists and nine rebounds.
Prescott (26-2) beat Valders 63-62 to win the Division 3 title. Peter Brookshaw drilled a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give Prescott the victory. He finished with 28 points. Prescott won its first state title.
Manitowoc Roncalli (23-5) topped Marathon 53-37 to win the Division 4 state title. Roncalli had never won a state tournament game in its previous seven appearances.
Bangor (27-1) won the Division 5 title, whipping Chippewa Falls McDonell 91-67. Bangor was making its first state tournament appearance since 1936 and became the first school in the history of the WIAA to win state titles in football, girls basketball and boys basketball in the same school year.
