GILMAN – Spencer scored four times in the sixth inning then had to hold off a late Gilman rally to top the Pirates 9-6 in a Cloverbelt Conference East Division softball game Friday.

Spencer pulled ahead 9-2 after scoring three times in the fifth and adding four more in the sixth.

Gilman scored once in the sixth and three times in the seventh before Spencer pitcher Tiffany Meinders finished off the victory.

Meinders struck out 11 in the win.

Sadie Mercier had three hits, three RBIs, and scored three times, and Lexi Baehr had a double, a home run and drove in a pair of runs for Spencer (2-1, 2-0 Cloverbelt East). Chloe Drews also had two hits and drove in a run for the Rockets.

“I am very impressed with our bats today,” first-year Spencer coach Laschel Canfield said. “Lexi coming up with a big home run, she
has been working really hard on it and it has paid off. Also extremely proud of Tiffany. After a rocky start to the seventh inning, she dug deep and shut them down with two strikeouts to end the game.”

Spencer plays a conference doubleheader at Neillsville on Tuesday.
