MARSHFIELD – Stevens Point scored five times in the top of the first inning and got 4 1/3 innings of shutout pitching from reliever Andrea Cherney as the Panthers topped Marshfield 14-5 in a Wisconsin Valley Conference softball game Tuesday at the Marshfield Fairgrounds.
Point touched Marshfield pitcher Megan Donahue with the big first inning, and after the Tigers responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame, the Panthers scored three times in the second to open up an 8-2 lead.
The Tigers scored three times in the third to cut the deficit in half, but Point (15-0, 7-0 Wisconsin Valley Conference) responded again with two runs in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth to extend its lead.
Cherney closed the door for the Panthers, striking out three and scattering four hits after entering the game with two outs in the third inning. She also had a pair of hits and drove in four runs.
Donahue allowed seven walks, 13 hits and 11 earned runs in a complete-game effort. She also had three of Marshfield’s eight hits, including a home run.
Jenna Jakobi went 2-for-4 and scored twice, and Kate Konrardy had two RBIs for Marshfield (10-3, 3-2 WVC).
Marshfield is scheduled to play at D.C. Everest on Thursday.
