MARSHFIELD – Despite a solid defensive effort, the Marshfield girls soccer team dropped a Wisconsin Valley Conference game to Wisconsin Rapids 2-1 on Thursday at Griese Park.

Mia Iwanski scored 17:02 into the second half to break a tie game and the Raiders held on from there.

Marshfield held Wisconsin Rapids to just 13 shots on goal, but mustered just four itself, and the only goal came from Kate Schilling, on an assist from Kendra Tremelling, 8 minutes before halftime.

Kaidee Voight had given the Raiders an early 1-0 lead with a goal at the 4:42 mark.

“We connected many more passes, but looked a step or two slow through the midfield transition from offense to defense,” Marshfield coach Steve Lindner said. “That, and allowing an early goal, has put us on our heels a few times that we need to adjust.

“Paige Preston had an outstanding game and challenged 50/50 balls and took control of punted balls like never before. We were impressed with Paige’s play and only great things are ahead for her. We need her to control the mid field like tonight to make us that much stronger. Anna Pappe and Makenna Hart also had nice defensive games.”

Marshfield (1-6-2, 0-2 Wisconsin Valley Conference) hosts Merrill at 5 p.m. Friday in a nonconference game.
