LOYAL – The Spencer softball took a big step toward a fourth-straight Cloverbelt Conference East Division title with a doubleheader sweep of Loyal on Thursday.
The Rockets won 12-1 and 11-7 to improve to 9-2 overall and 8-1 in the Cloverbelt East, to remain in first place in the conference standings.
Tiffany Meinders picked up the win in both games for the Rockets, striking out four in the opener and 13 in Game 2.
Aryiah Schuh had three RBIs, and Meinders had two hits and two RBIs in Game 1 for the Rockets.
Spencer scored seven times in the second inning and led 9-0 in Game 2 before Loyal (4-7, 4-6 Cloverbelt East) made a game of it. The Greyhounds scored six times int eh fourth and added another in the sixth, but the Rockets were able to hold on.
Sadie Mercier had three RBIs, and Meinders, Lexi Baehr, Chloe Drews and Pagie Bauer each had two hits for Spencer, with Meinders driving in a pair.
“We had a really great start to this game, but couldn’t come up with the big plays once Loyal started hitting the ball hard,” Spencer coach Laschel Canfield said of the Game 2 win. “I’m so proud of the girls. They got it done to hang onto this one. It was a whole team effort.”
Spencer hosts Colby on Friday, then plays at Colby on Tuesday. The Rockets finish their regular-season and Cloverbelt East schedule with a doubleheader at home against Marshfield Columbus Catholic on May 17 and a single game against Gilman on May 18.
